Bioalcalino D – Vitamina D3 vegana da lichene con matrice lipidica vegetale: una scelta nutrizionale per supportare assorbimento e fisiologia della vitamina D

Bioalcalino D – Vegan D3 vitamin from lichen with a plant-based lipid matrix: a nutritional choice to support vitamin D absorption and physiology

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for maintaining the body’s physiological balance throughout all stages of life. Traditionally associated with bone health, it is now also recognized for its role in muscle function, the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption, and support of normal immune system function.

Vitamin D belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins, meaning that it is naturally absorbed in the intestine in the presence of dietary fats. After absorption, it is transported, metabolized in the liver and kidneys, and converted into its biologically active form, which is capable of interacting with the vitamin D receptor (VDR) found in numerous tissues throughout the body.

In everyday practice, achieving adequate vitamin D levels can be difficult. Skin synthesis decreases with age, sun exposure is often insufficient, and natural dietary sources are limited and predominantly animal-based.

In this context, Bioalcalino D was developed with a formulation rationale focused on three aspects: the source of vitamin D, the presence of a plant-based lipid matrix, and support for bioavailability.

A distinctive feature of the formulation is the use of vitamin D3 obtained from lichen (Cladonia rangiferina), a vegan source of cholecalciferol.

Most vitamin D3 used historically in supplements is derived from animal-based lanolin; Bioalcalino D instead uses vitamin D3 obtained from lichen, allowing for a choice compatible with a plant-based dietary approach.

The formulation also combines a blend of plant oils naturally rich in fatty acids.

Per daily dose (1 ml), it provides:

Vitamin D3 from Cladonia rangiferina: 2000 IU (50 μg – 1000% NRV)

Flaxseed oil: 250 mg

Borage oil: 250 mg

Evening primrose oil: 250 mg

Cumin oil: 250 mg

Characteristic lipid content:

Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid): 162 mg

Omega-6 (linoleic acid): 539 mg

GLA (gamma-linolenic acid): 95 mg

Omega-9 (oleic acid): 237 mg

Formulation rationale

Vegan vitamin D3 from lichen

Bioalcalino D uses vitamin D3 obtained from Cladonia rangiferina, a non-animal source of cholecalciferol.

Biologically, the molecule obtained is equivalent to conventional vitamin D3 and follows the same metabolic pathways after absorption.

Vitamin D contributes:

to the normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus;

to the maintenance of normal bones;

to the maintenance of normal muscle function;

to the normal function of the immune system.

These indications correspond to the claims authorized at the European level.

Plant-based lipid matrix and absorption

Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, intestinal absorption occurs through micelles that form in the presence of dietary fats.

For this reason, Bioalcalino D combines vitamin D with a matrix composed exclusively of plant oils.

The association with fats and essential fatty acids does not alter the mechanism of the vitamin but represents a formulation choice consistent with the physiology of fat-soluble vitamin absorption.

Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 from plant oils

Flaxseed oil provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a precursor of omega-3s.

Borage and evening primrose oils provide gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which belongs to the omega-6 family.

Cumin oil completes the lipid profile of the formulation.

The plant oils present in the formula are traditionally used in dietary supplementation for their contribution to the integrity and function of cell membranes.

Vitamin D, immune system and muscle function

Interest in vitamin D is not exclusively related to bone health.

The VDR receptor is also expressed in immune system cells and muscle tissue.

The active form of vitamin D contributes to the regulation of the physiological immune response and the maintenance of muscle function, aspects that are particularly relevant with age, during periods of reduced sun exposure, or when dietary intake is limited.
