Water as a Biological Environment
We are accustomed to thinking of water simply as H₂O. From a biological perspective, however, water is much more than a simple solvent.
Every cell in the organism lives in an aqueous environment. Proteins fold and function in the presence of water, cell membranes interact continuously with it, ions are transported across aqueous compartments, and numerous metabolic reactions depend directly on the physicochemical properties of the aqueous environment.
The structure of liquid water is not static. The molecules are united by a dynamic network of hydrogen bonds that forms, breaks, and reorganizes continuously. Spectroscopic studies have shown that this network possesses extremely rapid dynamics, with structural correlations that decay on ultrashort timescales.
This finding is important because it allows us to understand a fundamental principle: water is not a rigid and permanent structure, but a dynamic system that responds to its physical and chemical environment.
It is precisely from this characteristic that modern biophysics' interest in water and its interaction with membranes, proteins, minerals, fields, and biological molecules arises.
Water and Cellular Communication
In our organism, water directly participates in the regulation of cellular balance.
A fundamental role is played by aquaporins, specialized proteins present in cell membranes that allow for the rapid and regulated transport of water.
In humans, numerous isoforms of aquaporins have been identified, distributed in different tissues, including the kidney, brain, muscle, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and blood vessels.
Aquaporins do not function as simple “open doors”: their activity is strictly regulated and contributes to the balance of cellular volumes, fluid homeostasis, and numerous physiological processes.
This means that biological hydration does not simply consist of “getting water into the cell”. It is a process regulated by osmotic gradients, membranes, transport proteins, electrolytes, and cellular signals.
For this reason, it is more correct to speak of physiological hydration rather than a generic “water that immediately enters the cells”.
Water is Structured, but Its Structure is Dynamic
One of the most interesting concepts concerns the so-called structure of water.
H₂O molecules can temporarily organize themselves through hydrogen bonds, forming different local configurations. Scientific literature indeed describes transient structures and aggregations in liquid water.
Water exists in molecular configurations such as “trimers”, “pentamers”, or “clusters”.
The Role of Molecular Hydrogen
One of the characterizing elements of BAB Water is the presence of dissolved molecular hydrogen, H₂, together with the alkaline component.
Molecular hydrogen is currently the subject of important biomedical research. Its possible effects on oxidative processes, inflammation, mitochondrial function, and redox regulation systems have been studied.
Clinical research is still evolving, but there are randomized studies and systematic reviews that have observed possible modifications of certain markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in certain populations.
The interesting point of BAB Water is precisely the integration of the characteristics:
water + alkalinity + minerals + molecular hydrogen + physical treatment.
It is therefore not a matter of putting “alkaline water” and “hydrogenated water” in competition, but of considering them as complementary properties of the same system.
Alkalinity and the Physiological Environment
Alkaline water has a pH higher than 7. BAB Water is designed to produce alkaline water, with a value that can reach approximately pH 9.5, depending on the operating conditions of the system.
However, the pH of water must not be confused with the pH of blood.
The organism maintains blood pH within a very narrow range through buffer systems, respiration, and kidney function. Drinking alkaline water does not significantly and permanently change the pH of blood in a healthy person.
This does not mean that the pH of water is irrelevant: it means that its biological significance must be correctly interpreted.
A systematic review of the available studies on the healthy population did not find sufficient evidence to attribute systemic effects superior to mineral water to alkaline water for several evaluated clinical parameters.
For this reason, BAB Water should be described above all as an alkaline water with defined physicochemical characteristics, not as a tool to “alkalinize the blood”.
Redox Potential: An Important Physical Parameter
Another measurable characteristic is the oxidation-reduction potential, ORP.
The ORP value describes the tendency of a system to participate in oxidation or reduction reactions. A more negative value indicates more reducing conditions.
In the case of water rich in hydrogen, a negative ORP can be associated with the presence of H₂ and the physicochemical conditions of the system.
This parameter is interesting above all because it directly links the composition of water to redox chemistry, a fundamental system for cellular physiology.
In fact, the organism continuously produces reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and has endogenous systems to control them.
Research on H₂ is precisely studying the possible relationship between molecular hydrogen, oxidative stress, and cellular redox regulation systems.
The True Biophysics of Water: Interfaces, Membranes, and Proteins
The concept of “water biophysics” becomes particularly interesting when we observe what happens at the interface between water and biological structures.
Water molecules interact continuously with:
lipid membranes, proteins, electrolytes, macromolecules, mineral surfaces, and cellular structures.
Water surrounding a protein, for example, does not necessarily behave in the same way as water present in the volume of the solution.
This interfacial water contributes to the structure and function of biomolecules.
Molecular biology research has highlighted how important the properties of hydrogen bonds and water are for protein folding, molecular interactions, and the functioning of biological structures.
This is the most interesting part of the concept of “water information”: it is not necessary to hypothesize a mysterious permanent memory of water to recognize that water is an integral part of the physical environment in which biological information is transmitted and interpreted.
BAB Water: An Integrated System
BAB Water arises from this integrated vision.
The system does not merely filter water, but intervenes on multiple levels:
1. Purification
Through the treatment process, water is stripped of numerous unwanted substances present in the starting water.
2. Remineralization
After the filtration phase, water is enriched again through mineralizing materials.
3. Alkalinization
The process results in water with an alkaline pH.
4. Presence of molecular hydrogen
The system is designed to produce water containing dissolved H₂.
5. Biophysical characterization
The characteristics of water can be studied through physicochemical parameters and, where appropriate, through spectroscopic techniques such as NMR.
The result should not be presented as a new form of H₂O, but as water subjected to a technological process capable of modifying and controlling some of its measurable properties.
What “Trimer Water” Means in the BAB Project
In the proprietary language of the project, the term “Trimer” identifies the idea of a molecular configuration of water characterized by small transient associations of molecules.
“BAB Water uses the concept of trimer structure as a proprietary biophysical model to describe the dynamic interaction of water with the treatment system and its physical characteristics.”
From Biophysics to the Organism
When we drink, water passes through a highly sophisticated biological system.
It is absorbed mainly through the gastrointestinal tract, enters the circulation, and is distributed throughout the different body compartments.
Its distribution is regulated by osmolarity, electrolytes, kidney function, hormones, and aquaporins.
There is therefore no single characteristic of water that can explain the entire response of the organism on its own.
It is more correct to consider the set of water properties:
purity → mineral composition → pH → H₂ → redox potential → interactions with membranes and proteins → physiological response.
It is precisely this systemic vision that represents the paradigm of BAB Water.
BAB Water and Physical Activity
Hydration is particularly important during physical activity.
The loss of water through sweat changes the plasma volume and the hydro-electrolyte balance. Significant dehydration can impair thermoregulation ability and performance.
“For those who exercise, maintaining proper hydration is fundamental. BAB Water offers alkaline water rich in molecular hydrogen, with a defined mineral profile, designed to accompany daily hydration before, during, and after physical activity.”
The New Idea of Hydration
The true innovation does not consist in claiming that a certain water “cures” the organism.
It consists in moving from the idea of water as a simple volume to consume to the idea of water as a characterized and controllable physicochemical system.
BAB Water arises exactly from this perspective.
A technology that works on the quality of water before it is consumed, integrating:
filtration, remineralization, alkalinity, molecular hydrogen and biophysical characteristics.
The result is water designed to be different not because it is “magical”, but because its measurable characteristics are different.
Water as a bridge between chemistry and biology
Modern research shows us that water plays a profound role in biology.
It is involved in the structure of proteins, transport across membranes, osmotic balance, regulation of cell volume and the organization of molecular interactions.
Water is therefore simultaneously:
a solvent, a carrier, a reaction medium and a fundamental component of cellular architecture.
BAB Water starts from this awareness and seeks to bring it into everyday life through a technology capable of controlling certain properties of water before consumption.
not simply drinking water, but knowing the water we drink.
